Edwardian chimney-piece restoriation in the French manner for a London town house

This Edwardian chimney-piece was discovered in a mews building and had been left un-crated for many years. After gentle cleaning with non abrasive cleaning agents much of the accumulated grime to the surface was removed and further discolouration from smoke staining was extracted using poultices after test trials on small areas. A block of veined Carrara marble was sourced from Italy and cut into slabs for the hearths and one of these was then cut to the exact size of the chimney-piece at its base. This is the architecturally correct way to fit a chimney-piece so that the hearth, which is part of the decoration of a room, draws your eye into the chimney-piece; the burning area or fireplace, “where the fire is placed” has been painted black.
