A late 18th Century Sicilian Jasper and Statuary Marble Chimney-piece perhaps from the Devalls workshop.

We effected the restoration of this Chimney-piece many years ago. Subsequently we have restored a number of Chimney-pieces which incorporate similar circular Paterae to the frieze, which are all characteristically inlaid with ornamental marbles, such as the Jasper on this example. It is difficult to be certain but a number of locations and the dates that these Chimney-pieces were introduced suggest that this motif may have been characteristic of the workshop of John Devall (1728-94) in Little Portman Street.
