A mid 18th century English Statuary Marble Chimney-piece after a design by Inigo Jones.

This Chimney-piece required cleaning and the replacement of the plinth blocks which had been lost and poorly copied. This extraordinary design probably modified by Lord Burlington for the Blue Velvet Room at Chiswick House was to become one of the most popular Chimney-pieces from the 1730s. In keeping with the Palladian ideals the Chimney-piece has a square opening and it seems reasonable to assume that the mask, incorporated by Burlington, would have been an allegorical reference to Vesta the Roman Goddess of the hearth.
