An early 19th century English Derbyshire Black marble Chimney-piece.

With the outbreak of war with France at the end of the 18th Century, Britain had to look to it's own supplies of marble to produce Chimney-pieces. Although Derbyshire Black Marble has been used earlier for Chimney-pieces, from 1800 to 1820, a great number of Chimney Pieces were produced. This example probably dates to circa 1815. The marble was highly reflective when fully polished and in combination with polished steel and brass surfaces has a striking effect. Note however the bars on this Grate are a modern replacement for the lost originals.
